Lord Winston has asked the Government to produce figures to support his belief that “cycle lanes cause pollution” [Online, January 16]. As a scientist, it is odd that he is still repeating his myopic viewpoint, despite clearly having no evidence to support it.

I say “myopic” because there is a paradox at work here. An individual who continues driving along a road with new cycle lanes could end up emitting more pollution for this part of their journey.

Yet Transport for London’s data shows that its new cycle lanes are already enabling a lot more people to travel along them, making better use of space and emitting no pollution throughout their journeys.

Expanding London’s cycle routes into a joined-up network will continue to improve Londoners’ health, wealth and wellbeing — whether or not they decide to take up cycling.
