The traffic in central London on Sunday was a disgrace due to the RideLondon event and most certainly reflected badly on London as an international capital city.

That so many principal arteries were closed down for 24 hours for a bicycle jamboree, causing absolute chaos on the roads, left a nasty taste in the mouth. Family jaunts and meetings with friends were thrown into disarray as the capital ground to an ignominious halt, especially in west London.

With the Cromwell and Talgarth Roads closed, the area was gridlocked. On one road at the back of Charing Cross Hospital, a fire engine was stationary and an ambulance struggled through the endless line of cars.

The authorities must reconsider providing a licence for such an event. Encouraging people to cycle is meant to reduce the chaos on London’s roads, not create an annual disorderly madness like this.
