People will criticise Sir Vince Cable’s decision to run for leadership given that he is now 74 and has been around the block a few times.

But I think the Liberal Democrats will just be happy to have a leader who is modern in his approach and backs policies such as same-sex marriage, given the recent furore over Tim Farron’s beliefs.

The new Lib-Dem leader Sir Vince Cable says he wants an exit from Brexit, happily ignoring the result of a democratic vote.

He also makes the assumption that the UK will be poorer after leaving the EU. Why? Both the UK and the EU want free trade to continue and it should therefore not be difficult for a sensible deal to be reached. The UK will also be able to go its own way in a world full of opportunity.

History shows we have always flourished in the long term, regardless of short-term circumstances.
