Gamma, a new emulator for playing classic PlayStation 1 games on iPhone and iPad, has just landed in the iOS App Store.

It quickly became one of the top 10 apps in the Entertainment category after its release.

It is available for both iPhone and iPad with support for Bluetooth controllers and keyboards, and includes customisable on-screen controller skins.

Here is everything you need to know.

What is the Gamma app?

Gamma is created by developer ZodTTD, which has been creating emulators for the iPhone since the earliest days of third-party iOS apps. You may be familiar with the name ZodTTD if you've installed emulators on your iPhone back when jailbreak was a necessary step to do so.

Gamma gives Apple users the the ability to relive classics such as Crash Bandicoot.

It uses Google Drive and Dropbox cloud syncing for backing up your game files and saving states (snapshots you can save at any time and reload).

It supports touchscreen controls, with a customisable on-screen controller skin.

It will also automatically pull the artwork for any games you add to the app.

Gamma does not require BIOS files to run games. However some users have reported issues getting some ROMs to run smoothly, but bug fixes are likely coming soon.

Plus, Gamma is completely free to download. However, it’s worth keeping in mind that Gamma's App Store page discloses that it collects data identifiers that may be used to track you, as Verge reported.

X users shared their thoughts about the launch. One referenced Jackie Chan Stuntmaster, and said, “time to play this legendary masterpiece”.

Another made references to the nostalgia these services create: “I find it beautiful how we keep returning to the things that made the child in us happy.”

“Can this come to Android please?” another tweeted.
