The Great British Bake Off turned Apocalypse Now in the second episode of the series – and Louise couldn’t survive the gingerbread nightmare that unfolded.

The hairdresser was sent home from the show after struggling in Biscuit Week.

In the signature challenge, Paul Hollywood and Mary Berry tasked the contestants with making 24 identical biscuits, while the technical task saw the bakers make Viennese Whirls.

However, the gingerbread showstopper round saw several contestants suffer structural collapses as they attempted hugely ambitious creations.

Louise’s church wedding-themed construction - chosen as she is getting married herself next year - suffered major assembly issues, putting her in the firing line of Paul and Mary.

The incomplete design and collapsed structure cost her a place in the competition going forward.

“Biscuits aren’t my thing,” she said, after being eliminated. “I came, I tried, I had a disaster.

“I’ve accepted it, I’m going home.”

Berry commended Louise for her attitude, saying: “Full marks for carrying it off with a big smile.”

Star Baker went to Candice, who recreated the family pub she grew up in as her showstopper.

Next week’s episode will bring Bread Week – with the teaser clip hinting that Paul is setting some of his toughest challenges ever.
