Alexandra Burke was left overwhelmed after the judges awarded her 40 points for her Salsa on Strictly Come Dancing.

The former X Factor winner, 29, received a standing ovation from the panel after finding herself in the dance-off two weeks in a row with partner Gorka Marquez.

Craig Revel Horwood deemed it “absolutely fab-u-lous,” while Shirley Ballas said: “It was party time all the way.”

Darcey Bussell pledged to wear Bruno Tonioli’s swimwear if Burke didn’t reach the final. She said: “If you’re not in that final I’m going to get into [Tonioli’s] Speedos!”

Viewers were delighted with the score, with many joking Christmas had come early.

One tweeted: “Seriously hope Alexandra wins to prove that unnecessary hate is uncalled for. She is outstanding and gracious #strictly.”

Another posted: “Chuffed for Alexandra and Gorka finally getting a deserved perfect 40.”

Burke topped the semi-final leader board after scoring 39 points for her Viennese Waltz.

But hot on her heels is Holby City actor Joe McFadden who finished with a combined score of 70 for his American Smooth and Argentine Tango which was hailed as “perfect” by Bussell.

Debbie McGee also finished on 70, but faced criticism from the judges, including Revel Horwood who compared her facial expressions to former contestant Judge Rinder.

Gemma Atkinson finished with 62 points for her Rumba and Tango while Mollie King came close to tears as she finished bottom with 56 points after failing to impress with her Samba.

Strictly Come Dancing is on BBC One, Sunday at 7:15pm.
