Andy Carroll’s West Ham future beyond the end of the season looked increasingly uncertain today, following a row with manager David Moyes which led him to be sent home from training.

Carroll, 29, left his place on the substitutes’ bench before the end of the 4-1 home defeat by Manchester City on Sunday, unhappy that Moyes had not included him in a triple second half substitution.

The West Ham manager, who forged a reputation, during 11 seasons at Everton, as being a tough disciplinarian promised, after the match that he would “deal” with the situation in training on Monday. “In this situation,” he said, “what you need is everyone to be a team member.”

The pair subsequently met at the club’s Rush Green training ground yesterday but far from the situation being resolved, it is understood that Carroll refused to apologise and was sent home by Moyes.

The senior squad were off today and Carroll is expected back training tomorrow, building up to Saturday’s crucial Premier League encounter at Leicester.

Moyes has said previously that the big striker is one of the most important members of his squad but this latest fall-out may signal an impending parting of the ways, even if the former Everton, Manchester United, Real Sociedad and Sunderland manager does not remain at the club beyond the end of his short-term contract.

There was speculation that Carroll was on the point of leaving in January when Chelsea, who subsequently signed Olivier Giroud from Arsenal, were keen to sign him while, shortly after, he had another lengthy spell out of action with a stress fracture.

The Gateshead-born striker joined West Ham on a six-year contract for a then club record of £15 million in 2013, is one of the highest earners in the squad, being paid around £100,00 per week but his five seasons at the East London club have been punctuated by a series of injuries.

In almost five seasons at the club, injuries have restricted him to just 126 appearances, scoring 32 goals.

West Ham are currently 15th in the table but only three points above the relegation places. Moyes has been keen to point out that the spirit within the squad has been good despite their precarious position and will be determined this spat with Carroll does not linger on in what will be an anxious last three games of the season.
