Anthony Gordon: Chelsea transfer target told to stay at Everton

Jonathan Gorrie17 August 2022

Anthony Gordon has been told to stay at Everton despite interest from Chelsea.

The forward has been the subject of two offers from Stamford Bridge with Thomas Tuchel having identified Gordon as a primary target.

Sources close to the situation suggest a bid of around £50m would be enough to reach a breakthrough in talks, though Everton currently insist the player is not for sale.

Frank Lampard is believed to view the academy graduate as integral to his plans, although the club’s hand could be forced should a large bid be made.

Gordon enjoyed a breakthrough campaign in the Premier League last season, emerging as a beacon of hope for Everton supporters during an otherwise miserable campaign. In 35 outings, the England U21 international scored four times, including a crucial winner against Manchester United in April.

Still, Gordon has been warned by former Everton winger Andrei Kanchelskis to stay at Goodison Park for another season in order to aid his development, much as Wayne Rooney did before moving to United in 2004.

“Gordon is a great player,” he told OLBG.

“He’s like Rooney, a younger player for Everton. Chelsea are interested in him. I think he should stay this season at Everton then move to another club next season like Rooney did.

“Rooney stayed for one or two seasons then moved. If Gordon stays and wants to play over money, he will be a good player, that is very important for all young players.”
